Shout Out to Dad, The Dude

Gabe CateSince Father's Day is this weekend I want to acknowledge the Dad behind SBfamilies.com - Gabe Cate. Without his ideas, encouragement and patience, SBfamilies.com would still be just an idea.

Caya and Soren, our girls, usually draw pictures and make some type of craft involving paint, stickers, tape and whatever else we find in our craft supplies. Gabe, as so many fathers do, proudly receives and displays the masterpieces of love. No matter how the art pieces turnout, the very idea behind them brings joy and a smile on even the toughest days. You can never have enough of your child's creations in your office or around your home.

Last year I decided to show my appreciation for Gabe by making him a few parenting promise and keeping with this tradition, here are more for 2010. Yes, I will admit to making a few handmade cards but I've decided stickers aren't appreciated when coming from another adult. I'll "stick" to promises.

I promise to...

  • give you "yard passes" for nights out on the town (without curfew or calls)
  • serve you meat every now and then
  • watch World Cup games and not ask questions for 15 minutes
  • check your pockets before doing laundry
  • iron more (I hate ironing)
  • do my best at keeping these promises. Like New Year's Resolutions, my intent is good but my patience and will-power can falter from time to time.

Our children and I raise our glasses (apple juice) to toast the numerous supportive Dads out there. You are invaluable.

Moms - I hope that you, too, will make a promise to appreciate the DAD in your life throughout the year, not just on Father's Day.

10 Ways to Be A Better Dad

1. Start Early, Never Stop
It is never too early to talk, tickle, caress, kiss, and play with your child - the sooner, the better.

2. Realize That No One Is a Natural
No one is born a dad or mom.

3. Respect Your Children's Mother
One of the best things a father can do for his children is to respect their mother

4. Spend Time with Your Children
How a father spends his time tells his children what's important to him. If you always seem to busy for your children, they will feel neglected no matter what you say. Treasuring children often means sacrificing other things, but it is essential to spend time with your children. Kids grow up so quickly. Missed opportunities are forever lost.

5. Earn the Right to Be Heard
All too often the only time a father speaks to his children is when they have done something wrong. Take time and listen to their ideas and problems.

  Father's Day Quotations

Theodore M. Hesburgh
The most important thing that a father can do for his children is to love their mother.

Clarence B. Kelland
My father didn't tell me how to live; he lived, and let me watch him do it.

Jewish Proverb
When a father gives to his son, both laugh; when a son gives to his father, both cry.

Lee Iacocca
My father always used to say that when you die, if you've got five real friends, then you've had a great life.

Ernest Hemingway
To be a successful father... there's one absolute rule: when you have a kid, don't look at it for the first two years.

Joseph Joubert
Love and fear. Everything the father of a family says must inspire one or the other.

Pope John XXIII
It is easier for a father to have children than for children to have a real father.

Lydia M. Child
Blessed indeed is the man who hears many gentle voices call him father!

Sir Stephen Spender

When a child, my dreams rode on your wishes,
I was your son, high on your horse,

My mind a top whipped by the lashes
Of your rhetoric, windy of course.

Harmon Killebrew
My father used to play with my brother and me in the yard. Mother would come out and say, "You're tearing up the grass." "We're not raising grass," Dad would reply. "We're raising boys."

Bill Cosby
If the new American father feels bewildered and even defeated, let him take comfort from the fac

t that whatever he does in any fathering situation has a fifty percent chance of being right.
