This week is Diaper Action Week, during which many organizations are promoting THE DIAPER ACT. Have you heard of it?

The Diaper Act is a federal bill that would give child care centers the flexibility to supply diapers themselves to needy parents whose children attend their facilities.

Diapers aren't covered by WIC or SNAP, the food stamp program. Yet parents need approximately $100 worth of diapers each month for their babies.

The Facts:

• The DIAPER Act asks for NO additional federal funding
• Lack of diapers can result in (1) major health consequences and (2) a barrier to employment
• If Congress enacts the DIAPER ACT, eligible child care centers would have the flexibility and choice to provide diapers (disposable or cloth) to their neediest clients.

2 WAYS YOU CAN HELP:

1. SIGN A PETITION SUPPORTING THE DIAPER ACT.
Help families who need it be able to access childcare regardless of whether they can afford diapers.

2. DONATE DIAPERS IN SHREVEPORT-BOSSIER.
Be thankful this Thanksgiving that you can or did afford diapers for your little one. Instead of food, consider donating diapers.

The American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) reports the cost for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner increased about 13 percent this year.

In 2010, the average cost of a traditional Thanksgiving meal for 10 was $43.47. This year, the total cost of a Thanksgiving feast will be $49.20, a $5.73 increase from last year.

• Start a giving tradition as soon as your child begins receiving
  Learning about giving should come first then incorporate it into your family's everyday life. 
• Make philanthropy a family affair
  Discuss your hopes for your children's involvement in your philanthropy and listen to your children's philanthropic aspirations, but avoid onerous expectations.
• Support your community's philanthropic education initiatives
  If your child's school does not already have a volunteering program, suggest such a program to your local school board as a means of rounding out its students' education.
• Find a cause your child is passionate about
  Encourage your child to find a volunteer opportunity that suits his or her interests and talents. One child may be comfortable feeding the homeless and another may not. It's really important to applaud any initiative." 
• Be your child's example
  The greatest way to ensure that charitable giving is a significant and valued part of your children's lives is to ensure that it plays a large role and brings joy to your life.
