  Giving More

(BUILT IN) (Icons/Graphics) ChristmasMom_girlgiftX.jpgHappy Holidays to you & your family from SBfamilies.com!

It's great to give back all year long and especially rewarding during the holidays. In fact, it's a good lesson to show your children how to be generous with more than just money, but by also giving time and, for some, talents.

A couple times a month, my kids and I volunteer at our church's mission called the New Room. Early this month, we helped decorate the Christmas tree with children. It was so amazing to mingle and spend time with these wonderful children. I looked over and saw my son helping another child make their ornament and tears just welled up in my eyes. His leadership and compassion was moving. Later, he and I passed out mittens to anyone who would take them. I could really see the appreciation in their eyes as they took the mittens - especially since it was so cold outside and many of them walked.

That Sunday, I learned that many folks who came to the mission that night were in need of coats. Volunteers gave as many coats away as they could from the coat closet(Icons/Graphics) Coat.jpg, but still didn't have enough for everyone. One gentleman came for a coat but the only one that fit was a woman's coat. You'd think he'd turn it down, but he did not. This man, with a smile of pride, accepted the coat with appreciation knowing he'd be warm that evening. This story was shared with pretty much everyone at our church. One member found it so inspiring that he donated $500 to purchase more coats. Wal-mart had a sale on coats for $8 and another member bought an additional 82 coats to be given away. Talk about giving back...Amazing!

We all can help, large or small. Be an example for your children (and others) by giving time, talent & treasure. Giving is contagious.

Merry Christmas!

  Families Giving Back

Be an example for children, give to those in need.  You will teach understanding and compassion that will last a lifetime.

Opportunities for Giving

(BUILT IN) (Icons/Graphics) ChristmasTree.jpgThere are many different opportunities and ways you can give back during this season. Several stores offer an Angel tree. Other places such as The Gingerbread House, Providence House and area hospitals accept toys, clothing, baby blankets, etc. for the children they serve.

2-1-1

Help & Volunteer Opportunities just a dial away!
(BUILT IN) (Icons/Graphics) PhoneHotline.jpg

Since 1987, CenterpointTM Community Services has been serving as the source of information & referral for human services including; housing and/or shelter, utility assistance, healthcare/prescriptions, food distribution, and crisis intervention in Northwest Louisiana.

Anyone needing assistance can DIAL 2-1-1 from a land-line telephone and connect to our local 2-1-1 Call Center. This service is for folks who are in need of assistance but don't have an emergency or non-medical situation.

It's also a great resource for families to call to get a list of volunteer opportunities in soup kitchens, food pantries or elderly services. Get involved and get hands-on with helping out.

  Santa Express Mailbox

(BUILT IN) (Icons/Graphics) Christmas_Mailbox.jpgEvery year my kids want to write a letter to Santa and mail it. It's just so cute to see their letters every year. They started drawing pictures when they were little and now they can actually write a list! They are so precious to me that I mail the letters to my parents so that I can keep them!

This year, Shreveport Public Assembly & Recreation (SPAR) is offering a "Santa Express" Mail Service. It will be available from December 1st through December 18th and area kids can "mail" their letters directly to Santa at the North Pole. Take the letters, with a return address, to one of the "Santa Express" Mailbox locations listed below and you'll get a reply letter directly from ole' Saint Nick himself!(BUILT IN) (Icons/Graphics) Christmas_LetterToSanta.jpg

"Santa Express" Mailbox Locations:

  • Lobby of Government Plaza, 505 Travis Street
  • Bilberry Park Community Center, 1902 Alabama Avenue
