Happy Holidays to you & your family from SBfamilies.com!
It's great to give back all year long and especially rewarding during the holidays. In fact, it's a good lesson to show your children how to be generous with more than just money, but by also giving time and, for some, talents.
A couple times a month, my kids and I volunteer at our church's mission called the New Room. Early this month, we helped decorate the Christmas tree with children. It was so amazing to mingle and spend time with these wonderful children. I looked over and saw my son helping another child make their ornament and tears just welled up in my eyes. His leadership and compassion was moving. Later, he and I passed out mittens to anyone who would take them. I could really see the appreciation in their eyes as they took the mittens - especially since it was so cold outside and many of them walked.
That Sunday, I learned that many folks who came to the mission that night were in need of coats. Volunteers gave as many coats away as they could from the coat closet , but still didn't have enough for everyone. One gentleman came for a coat but the only one that fit was a woman's coat. You'd think he'd turn it down, but he did not. This man, with a smile of pride, accepted the coat with appreciation knowing he'd be warm that evening. This story was shared with pretty much everyone at our church. One member found it so inspiring that he donated $500 to purchase more coats. Wal-mart had a sale on coats for $8 and another member bought an additional 82 coats to be given away. Talk about giving back...Amazing!
We all can help, large or small. Be an example for your children (and others) by giving time, talent & treasure. Giving is contagious.
Merry Christmas! Jennifer@SBfamilies.com
