Keeping Your Family Safe From Fire!
Recently my daughter had a homework assignment where they had to draw a map from their bedroom to our family's meeting place in case of a fire. "Uh oh - do we have a plan?" I remember my son doing this same assignment last year but now I can't remember our meeting place. This, of course, made me a little nervous as I thought about the smoke alarm and other fire dangers in our house.
Did you know that 2/3 of home fires that kill children under age 5 occur in homes without a working smoke alarm? That's amazing to me because my husband and I always test our smoke alarm every 6 months. In fact, the kids usually remind us because it's fun to hear the loud voice warning us there is a fire. Plus, it also detects carbon monoxide, which is equally important.
October 4-10 is Fire Prevention Week. You can check out all our FIRE SAFETY TIPS in our Parent Tips or by clicking the links below. Halloween is an important time to be aware of fire safety, especially if you use candles for Jack-O-Lanterns. Nowadays, you can use light bulbs and battery operated candles that are much safer. As you decorate your house for the fall don't forget to educate your children about fire, and remember to use caution when lighting candles, especially around spider webs or fall leaves.
This month offers tons of great family-friendly, fun-filled events from Pumpkin Patches to Fall Festivals and Trunk or Treats! Be sure to check out the Events Calendar for all the details. Keep your little ghosts, monsters, Barbie's and Jedi's safe from fire this Halloween and have fun!
